Lori McCarthy's mission was simple: to fall in love with her homeland. She wanted to understand why everyone from her area – the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada – felt profoundly connected to their community, traditions and, perhaps most importantly, their recipes. In McCarthy's ensuing conversations with family and friends – her grandparents, fisherman, foragers, hunters and more – she had a realization: you don't simply find connection to a place, you have to cultivate it.
